The barber of Seville Gioachino Rossini A kaleidoscope of disguises, nighttime serenades, hilarious misunderstandings and famous arias. Il Barbiere di Siviglia was composed in a dozen days by Gioachino Rossini, and staged for the first time at the Teatro Argentina in Rome February 20, 1816. The outcome of the evening, one of the most sensational fiascos in the history of music, perhaps organized by admirers of Giovanni Paisiello who were disappointed to see the young musician with a subject already addressed by the elder Master, amplifies the unstoppable popularity of this masterpiece. The comic opera par excellence, here on stage in the production by Damiano Michieletto, the brilliant enfant terrible of theater direction.Il Barbiere di Siviglia (original title: Almaviva o sia L’Inutile Precauzione) Opera buffa in two acts from the homonymous comedy of Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beumarchais Libretto by Cesare Sterbini Music by Gioachino Rossini Edition: Edwin Kalmus & Co., Inc., Boca Raton, Florida Staging of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino / Maggioformazione – 2005 Sung in Italian

Festival dei due Mondi L’amor che move il sole e l’altre stelle Video-opera by Adriano Guarnieri for three soloists, five vocalists, choir, ensemble, seven trumpets, and live electronics The new composition – a Video-Opera – commissioned by Ravenna Festival to Adriano Guarnieri which premiered in Ravenna on the 5th of June 2015, is a journey thriving on the universal value of Dante’s work and meant to highlight its inexhaustible and refreshing modernity; in other words, its contemporary value. Hence the “contemporary” Dante evoked in Guarnieri’s new score, that completes the triptych started in 2007 with the Apocalypse in “Pietra di diaspro”, followed by “Tenebreae” in 2010, and now reaching the blinding light of the Paradise. A narrative score articulated in 14 musical sequences which combine fragments of the Paradise, assimilating the evocative force of Dante’s language and its sounds; a narrative where the fil rouge, as Guarnieri suggests, connects “the themes of light, infinite, worldly and physical love transformed into the metaphysical visions of Beatrice and the Virgin, and the motifs bringing us back to the motion of the spheres and the universes; in a pattern of symbols and theologies embodied by melodic, polyphonic, choral, instrumental elements, physically and spatially […]

In winter 1852 Giuseppe Verdi was in Paris. Here, at the Théâtre du Vaudeville, he witnessed one of the first representations of the Dame aux camelias, the theatrical adaptation of the novel by Alexandre Dumas fils. The drama of the courtesan Marguerite Gautier, modeled on the real Marie Duplessis, who challenge the bourgeois conventions and seeks redemption in the love of Armand, profoundly affected the composer. The subject of the new work was quickly decided and on March 6, 1853 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice Verdi staged La Traviata. But censorship could not tolerate such a harsh realism and required Verdi to backdate the story in a more reassuring “about 1700.” Perhaps it is for this reason that the first representation turned into a fiasco. As Verdi himself wrote, complaining on this edulcorations: “They have made Traviata pure and innocent. Thank you very much! A whore should always be a whore. If the sun was shining in the night, there would be no more night!” La traviata Opera in three acts Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, from drama La dame aux camélias, by Alexandre Dumas fils Music by Giuseppe Verdi
