A promised marriage, mistaken identity and solidarity between brothers-in arms, a lost ring that is found. Francesco Cilea’s very first opera, Gina was composed as the final test at the end of his composition studies; it is a delicate bourgeois comedy that is more veristic than Art Nouveau, with ‘in nuce’ echoes of the melodic and harmonic intuitions that are to appear in Adriana Lecouvreur and L’Arlesiana. A child of its times, as is so often the case it was also a forerunner of the future
